Welcome to the Conopus Club
Founded May 7, 1921, the club has been meeting weekly for several decades, most recently at the San Antonio Country Club.
Lunch is private, though Conopus members are encouraged to bring a guest (make sure to let Heather know), and we always have a speaker, unless the person in charge of the speaker screws up, or the speaker is called away to something more important. It happens. Each year, at the Christmas Party, recognition is given to the best programs and the worst programs. All in fun. Somewhere, there is a boar's head waiting to move from one member to the next. Speakers range from doctors, lawyers, authors, historians, veterans, engineers, police chiefs, and generally fascinating, to one grabbed off the rodeo grounds at the last minute to give a, let's say colorful, talk about her horse. Guess who won the boar's head that year. Firm rules are in place to discourage speakers who have a palm out asking for money, as are anyone who is campaigning. That said, we love our speakers and honor them with good questions and applause. Those who have a book available may arrange to sell some. With a storied membership, the Conopus Club tends to keep a low profile, and is not well known as an organization. A web search tends to turn up something about a ship and several obits, and not much else. Until now. The Tadpole
![]() The Tadpole was started in 1922. It is the name of our newsletter, and our mascot.
The name was chosen because a tadpole grows into something bigger--and swims upstream. It was supposed to be a temporary name, but no one submitted any other names, so it stuck. Please contact our Club Administrator should you have any questions or suggestions.
